Comvita is a natural healthcare company whose core business is producing and marketing high-value Manuka honey products. The company has invested heavily in a 15-year Manuka plant breeding and research programme focussed on increasing the quality and quantity of honey that is produced from Manuka. The knowledge gained and intellectual property created will be a key competitive advantage for Comvita and growers as the Governments introduction of a Manuka standard leads to a more formalised market.
Hop Revolution was established in 2014 with a vision of supplying New Zealand hops directly to international craft brewers. Having secured licences to grow New Zealand hop varieties protected by PVRs, the company plans to expand production in the hop growing heartland of Nelson. By working directly with brewers overseas, it aims to increase garden gate returns to growers and develop new hop varieties for which it will own the rights to global supply.
Freshmax is one of the largest fresh produce marketers and distributors in the Pacific. Founded in 1995, the company is based in New Zealand and has expanded its global activities through regional platforms in the US, Canada and Peru. Freshmax registered in Australia in 2006 and is now one of the most diverse fresh produce companies across the Tasman. In New Zealand, Freshmax has heavily invested in the production of apples, summerfruit, cherries, citrus, avocados and blueberries. An integrated supply chain enables it to oversee all operations within the production process, from growing, harvesting and packing to cool storage, shipping and marketing.
Rockit Group is a Hawke’s Bay-based apple exporter and marketer, known for its miniature snack apple variety, PremA96, otherwise known as Rockit. The company has positioned the Rockit apple as a premium product. It retains full control over planting volumes, distribution channels, markets and volume allocations to markets. It approves all growers, distributors, importers and retailers, and maintains a tight rein on product and packaging quality standards. Its priority is to continue building supply relationships with key high-end international retailers and expand the supporting supply chain back to licensed Rockit growers.
Sacred Hill Marlborough Vineyards is a subsidiary of privately-owned company, Sacred Hill Vineyards, based in Hawke’s Bay. The Hawke’s Bay operation makes wine from the company’s local vineyards and has a production capacity of more than 2000 tonnes. In Marlborough, the company partners with contract winemaker, VinLink, to produce premium export wines on a commercial scale. Wines are sold under the Sacred Hill brand, as well as a portfolio of other brands that are well established in New Zealand and overseas. These include Gunn Estate, Whitecliff, Wild South and Ti Point.
DMS Progrowers Limited is a locally owned avocado and kiwifruit orchard management and post-harvest operator. Established in 1989, it currently leases and manages around 550 hectares of kiwifruit orchards in the Bay of Plenty, making it one of the largest kiwifruit management companies in New Zealand. The company’s focus is on assisting orchards to increase productivity and grower profits. DMS is based in Tauranga and has two pack-houses at Te Puna and Te Puke.
